I know how to cite the dictionary in the references section of the paper. What I need to know is how to identify the word in the text as a cited item. I used the Oxford Online Dictionary. Here is the sentence: Money is defined as a current medium of exchange in the form of coins and banknotes; coins and banknotes collectively.
How do I let the reader know it is cited in the reference section? Hi Ethan, Thanks for your question. In this case, I would recommend using the components that you lead with in the APA reference. Since it is a reference work where you would not list an author, given the nature of the Oxford Online Dictionary, you would lead your reference list entry with Money, followed by the date.
Since in-text citations are intended to let your reader connect the ideas and sources you are building upon to the information listed in the reference list the dictionary entry and the date are what you should use in-text.
The APA Manual also notes that you should use double quotes around in-text citations when not using an author name p. So you might have an in-text citation that reads as "Money," Let us know if you have any follow up questions. Regards, Gabe. Would this be a correct citation for a reference list? Retrieved July 18, , from Dictionary.
Hi James, That's pretty close, but I recommend adding a few more details. I see that the site has a citation tool that formats it the way you have it here. However, those automated citation generators tend to have small errors, like capitalization. I recommend starting the entry with a capital letter.
Also, in this case there is actually publication date hiding on the page. If you look just under the entries you will see that there is a copyright date. Next to the copyright date is the name of Douglas Harper. End with a period. Next, put the word "In" followed by the title. If there is a subtitle, separate it from the title by adding a colon.
Capitalize only the first word of the title and subtitle and all proper nouns or abbreviations. Italicize the title but do not end with a period as the dictionary has an edition.
After the title of the book, add the edition number in parentheses. Add the abbreviation "ed" after the number. Place a period after "ed" and outside of the parentheses. Complete the reference with the name of the publisher.
Put the publisher's name exactly as shown on the title page. Be sure to retain the spelling and capitalization as it appears on the title page. End the citation with a period. NOTE: Do not include designations of business structure e. For more information about book references, see page of the APA Manual, 7th edition. For group authors, list the group author or company name exactly as it appears on the title page, including capitalization. Do not abbreviate group authors or a company name in the reference list. Add a period after the group author or creator. Next, in parentheses, list the year of publication.
If an online reference work is continuously updated and the versions are not archived, use "n. Next, add the term located or looked up in the dictionary and treat it as the title. Add a period after the term. Next, put the word "In" followed by the title of the book. Follow the general capitalization rule that says to only capitalize the first word of the title and subtitle as well as proper nouns and abbreviations.
Italicize the title and add a period after the title. Complete the reference with a Retrieval statement and URL. If an online reference is continuously updated and the versions are not archived, add a retrieval statement and retrieval date as well as the URL. The form of the retrieval statement is "Retrieved", then the exact date the material was accessed, followed by the word "from" and the URL to the source.
Do not put a period after the URL. For more information and additional examples, see Section Cambridge University Press n. It looks like you're using Internet Explorer 11 or older.
