Both are essential for salvation and each is dependent upon the other. To be saved, you must place faith in Christ for the forgiveness of sins. That decision requires a change of mind, or repentance, about your way of life. Both happen at the same time. Yet, many people mistakenly believe they must repent before they can make a faith decision for Jesus. There should actually be no delay or separation between repentance and faith.
Jesus is ready to receive you right now. Only as a child of God will you find the power - His power - to truly become the person He created you to be.

Investigating signs and ads, such as Repent and Sin No More! Pickwick—deepest obligations—life preserver—made a man of me—you shall never repent it, sir. When the father had finished, he stabbed his wife, telling her to repent of her sins and to confess to God who would pardon her. But later the Marshal had bitter cause to repent these triumphs won over his rival. But I listened to the voice in my head and switched to water.
Over the next couple of weeks, I kept going back to that moment in the bar, wondering why God asked me to stop drinking. One morning during my prayer time with God, I finally just asked God to reveal why he asked me to stop, and then it hit me. I had this lightbulb, aha moment. When I drink in excess, meaning for me more than 2 drinks, I start to lose all inhibitions. The more I drink, the more my moral compass disappears, and the worse my decisions become.
So what does that have to do with repenting? I had to make a choice that I can either turn towards God or turn away from God. I chose to go after God, which meant I had to turn away from what I was doing. That was repentance. I had to come up with a plan. More than that even, I had to share my plan with someone I trust who could hold me accountable, which is my husband, Doug. My plan became pretty simple. When I started on this journey of following God, the biggest fear I had was giving up things in my life that I thought I loved, like partying and going out.
But what God revealed to me is when I partied and got drunk, I not only woke up with a horrible hangover, but I also woke up with shame and regret for the things I did the night before. It helped me. When we understand repentance as a gift that helps us, we can actually want to do it. So here is my ask. Next time you are doing something, and a thought crosses your mind, God might be calling you to repent which, remember, simply means to change directions. What sweet freedom from shame.
Sometimes it helps to consider the opposite when understanding a term. So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts, to follow their own counsels. The definition of true repentance according to the Bible is a transformation in thinking that leads to a change in action.
So you repent by being changed in your mind and convictions. When you take action in accordance with your changed mind, you demonstrate your repentance. The story of Jonah is one of the best examples of repentance in the Bible — not only for Jonah but everyone else in the story as well.
Jonah was called by God to go and to the city of Nineveh and warn them that they had angered God because of their wickedness. This sounded quite unappealing to Jonah. So he decided to opt out, and hopped on board a ship going literally the other direction. God, of course, would not be thwarted. So He sent a violent storm that threatened all on board the ship, except apparently for Jonah, who slept through the storm.
The rest of the men on the ship were so impressed by the storm, they were convinced someone had angered a god. In their search for who was to blame, they woke up Jonah. It came to light that Jonah was to blame and has angered his God. Jonah confessed and asked to be thrown overboard. The crew, despite what Jonah had brought upon them, was reluctant to send him to his death.
In what is often the most talked-about part of this story, Jonah is then swallowed by a great fish inside which he stays for three days and three nights. Jonah prays, gets spit out onto land, and is told by God, once again, to go to Nineveh. So Jonah does.
He walks through the city shouting that Nineveh will be overturned in 40 days. The people of Nineveh immediately respond with fear and respect. Even the king gets off of his throne and calls for the whole city to humble themselves, turn from their evil ways, and call out earnestly to God in hopes that He will show them mercy.
And God does. Jesus is saying, change your mind and believe something new. Wrap your mind around this! Get on board! The word for faith in the Bible is the same as belief. It means to accept something as true. When we grasp the meanings of repentance and faith, it makes all the more sense that these two are paired together throughout scripture. Why is faith an important part? Well, because you can repent, change your mind, be convinced that something is wrong, and then go a different wrong way.
What is genuine repentance? Well, if you are truly convinced, if your mind is changed, then your actions will show it. Even the secular world has picked up on this. The men on the boat believed in many gods. Then, they acted on their new beliefs — tossing Jonah, giving sacrifices, and making vows to God.
You do well. The demons also believe, and shudder. But do you want to know, vain man, that faith apart from works is dead?
