Journeyman Mark Webber has some talent—everyone in F1 does—and has eight years experience in a range of teams, but his impetuousness and occasional outbursts of emotion has seen him squander as many opportunities as he has capitalized on. The factory is using it in their own team car with limited success, securing points in four of the five races, complete with a podium in Melbourne.
He is quoted on JamesAllenonF1. It was also their strength last year but they had a weakness in slow corners last year. This year they are good in slow corners and had retained their ability in high speed corners. After finishing the Styrian Grand Prix a distant second, Lewis Hamilton revealed it was impossible for him to keep up with the pace of the Red Bull. Speaking to Sky Sports F1 , the Mercedes F1 team driver said, "I did say it [Red Bull's pace advantage] was around a quarter of a second, I think it was probably that on average at least - even three or four tenths.
It was pretty impressive speed that they had. There was nothing I could do; I was giving it absolutely everything. I don't know really where they were gaining all that speed, I think it was everywhere in general, but particularly on the straights as far as I'm aware. They've definitely made some big steps the last couple of races and we've not really got an answer for it. A post shared by Lewis Hamilton lewishamilton. After falling short at Circuit Paul Ricard last week, Lewis Hamilton had said that the pace of the Red Bull was particularly strong on the straights, which would make it extremely difficult to overtake them at the Red Bull Ring this week.
This is because, in his own words, Mercedes has all but stopped making updates. We focus on ourselves. Toto likes to throw the lights somewhere else. I can't believe they can get through the year without putting a single component on the car. What we can do is focus on our own work ", he says.
If that means we all have to work harder, then the team is fully up for it," Horner quipped. Mercedes are also impressed with the Red Bull's top speed. They point to the new Honda engine that was introduced in France.
Red Bull says that this update only improves reliability, as the FIA regulations state that performance upgrades are not allowed.
Hamilton, however, claims Red Bull have somehow found more engine power. Horner: "We have a new oil from ExxonMobil. The Constructors' Championship looks like it will be going to Mercedes, unless Red Bull can unlock more performance. Mercedes' straight-line speed must be the biggest worry for Red Bull, especially in the acceleration phase out of certain corners.
Red Bull haven't done much wrong this year but overall they have had a slightly weaker car, and the trend over the past few months has moved towards Mercedes being the team to beat. If this continues in the remaining six races, you would have to put your money on Hamilton to take the title. That said, the cars are close enough that this year's championship could come down to a moment of misfortune, a reliability issue at an important time or an incident.
